# Arize (tracing)

> Trace Arize SDK operations with Respan and capture task-level telemetry in one stream.

[Arize](https://www.arize.com/) is a platform for AI observability and evaluation. This page covers tracing Arize SDK calls with `respan-instrumentation-arize`.

#### Set up Respan

Create an account at [platform.respan.ai](https://platform.respan.ai) and grab an [API key](https://platform.respan.ai/platform/gateway/api-keys).

Run `npx @respan/cli setup` to set up with your coding agent.

## Setup

#### Install packages

```bash
pip install respan-ai respan-instrumentation-arize arize
```

#### Set environment variables

```bash
export RESPAN_API_KEY="YOUR_RESPAN_API_KEY"
```

#### Initialize Respan and run

from arize import ArizeClient
from respan import Respan
from respan_instrumentation_arize import ArizeInstrumentor

respan = Respan(
    api_key=os.environ["RESPAN_API_KEY"],
    app_name="arize-tracing",
    instrumentations=[ArizeInstrumentor()],
)

client = ArizeClient(api_key="...")
print(client.datasets.list(space="respan-demo"))

respan.shutdown()

#### View your trace

Open the [Traces page](https://platform.respan.ai/platform/traces) to inspect Arize request spans with metadata, timing, and any captured request/response content.

## Configuration

| Parameter          | Type          | Default | Description                                          |
| ------------------ | ------------- | ------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| `api_key`          | `str \| None` | `None`  | Uses `RESPAN_API_KEY` when not passed.               |
| `base_url`         | `str \| None` | `None`  | Uses `RESPAN_BASE_URL` when not passed.              |
| `app_name`         | `str \| None` | `None`  | Service name for exported spans.                     |
| `instrumentations` | `list`        | `[]`    | Add `ArizeInstrumentor()` to activate Arize tracing. |
