OpenAI-compatible API server, plus Anthropic Messages API and gRPC
Quantization including FP8, INT4, GPTQ, AWQ, and GGUF
Speculative decoding and prefix caching

Strengths and tradeoffs

What each tool does well, and the limitations to keep in mind.

Fal.ai

Pros

4x faster inference for diffusion models enables real-time applications
Transparent output-based pricing proportional to content complexity
Strong funding (USD 400M) and valuation (USD 4B) indicate market confidence
Free tier with credits enables thorough evaluation

Cons

Output-based pricing can become expensive at scale
GPU custom deployments require infrastructure management knowledge
Newer platform with less extensive documentation than established providers
Pricing varies significantly by model and output type

vLLM

Pros

Apache 2.0 license, free to run
Built for high throughput under concurrent load
OpenAI-compatible server, so existing clients switch with a base URL change

Cons

You run, scale, and monitor the servers yourself
Serves only models you host, so routing to hosted APIs needs another layer
