Best For

Developers building local LLM workflows or tools that need a battle-tested, hardware-optimized inference runtime

Best For

ML and platform engineers serving open models on their own GPUs to many concurrent users

Product Summary

llama.cpp is the foundational C/C++ inference engine for running LLMs locally. 107K+ GitHub stars. Supports GGUF format with 1.5-bit through 8-bit quantization, Apple Silicon (Metal/Accelerate), x86 (AVX/AMX), CUDA, ROCm, and MUSA — the backbone of nearly every local-LLM tool in the ecosystem.

Product Summary

vLLM is an open-source inference and serving engine for LLMs, built for high-throughput serving on GPUs with an OpenAI-compatible API server.

Key features

Core capabilities each platform advertises.

llama.cpp

GGUF universal model format (weights + tokenizer + metadata in one file)
1.5-bit through 8-bit quantization with K-quants / IQ-quants
First-class Apple Silicon support (Metal, ARM NEON, Accelerate)
Custom CUDA kernels for NVIDIA, HIP for AMD, MUSA for Moore Threads
x86 AVX/AVX2/AVX512/AMX optimizations

vLLM

PagedAttention and continuous batching for high-throughput serving
OpenAI-compatible API server, plus Anthropic Messages API and gRPC
Quantization including FP8, INT4, GPTQ, AWQ, and GGUF
Speculative decoding and prefix caching

Strengths and tradeoffs

What each tool does well, and the limitations to keep in mind.

llama.cpp

Pros

The de-facto standard for local LLM inference
Best-in-class Apple Silicon support
Extensive quantization options (1.5-bit to 8-bit)
Active development with frequent releases
MIT-licensed and powering most of the local-LLM ecosystem

Cons

Low-level — most users want higher-level wrappers (Ollama, LM Studio)
C++ codebase has steeper contribution curve than Python projects
Quantization requires understanding of K-quants vs IQ-quants tradeoffs
Setup complexity higher than hosted APIs

vLLM

Pros

Apache 2.0 license, free to run
Built for high throughput under concurrent load
OpenAI-compatible server, so existing clients switch with a base URL change

Cons

You run, scale, and monitor the servers yourself
Serves only models you host, so routing to hosted APIs needs another layer
