What is Pi Coding Agent?

Pi is a minimal, open-source coding agent for the terminal, developed by Earendil and released under the MIT license. It keeps the core small and puts customization in extensions, skills, prompt templates, and themes, which can be bundled as Pi packages and installed from npm or git. MCP is built in, and Codemode lets the agent compose tool calls in a JavaScript sandbox.

Pi works with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure, Bedrock, Mistral, Groq, Cerebras, xAI, OpenRouter, Ollama, and other providers through API keys or OAuth, and runs interactively, in print or JSON mode, over RPC, or embedded through its TypeScript SDK. Pi itself is free, so the only cost is the model provider you connect.

The tradeoff is what Pi leaves out on purpose: there are no sub-agents, no plan mode, and no built-in permission system, so restricting what the agent can touch means running it in a container.
